Focus will be on turning bowls, lidded boxes, platters, and natural edge bowls. Other activities are possible depending on interest. Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by hands-on experience. A $25 materials fee is due at first session. Some woodturning experience required.

PREREQUISITE: Beginning Pen Making

Return to the wood lathe to construct higher quality, custom-designed writing pens. Build upon introductory skills through construction of more complicated pen kits, advanced barrel designs, and/or both. Learn about turning acrylics, Celtic knots, and inlay kits. Instructor will contact students in advance to discuss design plans and supply needs. Based on individual designs, the number of pens made and their material costs will vary. Estimate a $20-$50 - or more - material fee, due at first session.

For beginners! Introduction to the wood lathe through construction of two different writing pens. Instruction covers wood blank preparation, finishing techniques, and pen assembly. Pen turning skills translate to other small projects like bottle stoppers and pepper mills as well as larger projects like furniture legs and vessels. Tuition includes material costs.

Discover the quiet joy of woodworking with hand tools. Planes, chisels, spokeshaves, and scrapers only work well when tuned and sharpened correctly. Learn to select and prepare tools for maximum performance. Explore layout and cutting of basic joints, mortise and tenon, and dovetail. Suggested reading: The Anarchist's Tool Chest by Christopher Schwarz, Lost Arts Press.

Class includes both Woodworking I & II students.

Woodworking I: Learn basic and proper tool / equipment operation. Gain practical knowledge of hardwood properties, gluing techniques, mortise and tenon joinery, use of woodworking jigs, and applying finishes. Develop fundamental saw skills with a strong emphasis on safety. In consultation with instructor, each student will design and build at least one table. Materials cost approximately $40-$60, depending on individual wood choice.

Woodworking II: Choose your own project(s) and improve your woodworking skills. Guidance will be given on selecting an appropriate project and completing it. Learn new skills and tool techniques.
